What are UTM parameters?
UTM parameters (Urchin Tracking Module) are snippets of text added to the end of a URL to tell GA4 where a visitor came from. They are the most important tool for measuring the return on your marketing.
A complete UTM-tagged URL looks like this: yoursite.com/product?utm_source=linkedin&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=q2_launch
The five basic parameters
- utm_source says where the traffic comes from, for example google, linkedin or newsletter
- utm_medium says which channel was used, for example cpc, email, social or affiliate. These values must match GA4's channel group definitions, otherwise the traffic ends up in Unassigned
- utm_campaign is the campaign name, for example black_friday_2026 or q2_product_launch
- utm_content is used for A/B testing or to tell different ad variants apart
- utm_term is used for paid search campaigns to specify search terms
GA4 channel grouping and why it is critical
GA4 maps utm_medium values to predefined channel groups. If you write "Social" with a capital letter instead of "social" you create a separate data element. Standard utm_medium values are cpc or ppc for paid search, email, social, referral and affiliate.
Ten rules for correct UTM implementation
- Always use lowercase. GA4 is case sensitive, so "Email" and "email" give separate rows in your reports
- Use underscores consistently as the word separator, never spaces
- Document the naming convention and make sure everyone on the team follows it
- Do not tag organic traffic, because it overwrites GA4's correct classification
- Enable auto-tagging in Google Ads and rely on gclid instead of manual UTMs
- Never put personal data in UTM parameters, which is a GDPR violation
- Test the links before a campaign launches and verify them in GA4 Realtime
- Always include utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign
- Keep campaign names short and readable
- Run regular UTM audits in GA4 Traffic Acquisition
UTM parameters and Safari ITP
Safari ITP reduces cookie lifetime to 24 hours when fbclid or gclid is present in the URL. That affects attribution data for visitors coming from Meta ads in Safari. The solution is server-side tracking with a first-party subdomain.
Frequently asked questions
Which UTM parameters are required?
Always include utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign. utm_content and utm_term are optional.
Why does my traffic end up in Unassigned?
GA4 maps utm_medium values to its predefined channel groups. If your values do not match, for example because of a capital letter, the traffic does not land in the right group.
Should I add UTMs to Google Ads?
Enable auto-tagging in Google Ads and rely on gclid instead of manual UTMs.
